Learning Disabilities: ADHD Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) is a condition that can affect any person’s behavior and way of life. In their book, Special Education, J.Ysseldyke and B. Algozzine state that no area has experienced as much growth as learning disabilities. It is by far the largest of all special education categories. Enormous changes in the last century have changed the way society treats children with disabilities. Psychologist William Lee Heward affirms that in the 1800’s there were few public provisions dealing with adults or children with special needs. Teachers, parents, and†¦show more content†¦More than forty definitions for learning disabilities have been proposed; however, none is universally accepted. Of all this body of definitions, William L. Heward affirms that two have been most influential (246). One is the definition p roposed by the National Joint Committee on Learning Disabilities (NJCLD 1). The Committee defined learning disabilities as a general term that includes various different disorders that mainly manifest difficulties in the acquisition and use of listening, speaking, reading, writing, reasoning or in mathematical abilities. The Individual with Disabilities Act (IDEA) proposed another definition that has also been influential. That definition also states that specific learning disability is a disorder that is present in one or more of the basic psychological processes involved in understanding or using language, spoken or written. That difficulty may manifest itself in an imperfect ability to listen, think, speak, read, write, spell, or to do mathematical calculations (U.S. Office of Education 65083). Two characteristics frequently cited of children with learning disabilities are attention deficit and hyperactivity. Attention deficit is the inability to attend to a task while hyperactivity’s defined as high rates of purposeless movement.
